Engage in Giving
“When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.” Matthew 14:13-14
Though Jesus doesn’t give us the end of the story of the Samaritan and the dying man, we can image that there came a day when he walked out of that inn healed and went home to him family. This man, who was beaten, robbed and left for dead, was healed, strong and headed home! That should be our goal when we see the needs of the people around us.
Imagine how willing that man would be, for the rest of his life, to stop and help those he found on the side of the road. This deeper level of healing comes from showing the compassion of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. People who were helped and healed become willing to help and heal others. That is the culture Jesus desires us to bring to the world around us.
In the end, we do not worship, study the Bible, pray, gather, build ministries and build buildings so that we can “do church.” We must do all of this to bring healing to the world around us. And our world needs healing. When we give the world the love of Christ by seeing their pain, serving their needs and investing in their future, we see the healing power of Christ work in their lives through the presence of the Holy Spirit. When that happens enough times, attitudes change. When enough attitudes change, society changes.
It’s time for us to see the crowds, have compassion on them and, through the love and power of the Holy Spirit, bring healing!
